Indonesian authorities closed an international airport and residents left homes near an erupting volcano due to spreading ash, falling rocks and the possibility of a tsunami. MANADO, Indonesia (AP) — More than 2,100 people living near an erupting volcano on Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island were evacuated Friday due to the dangers of spreading ash, falling rocks, hot volcanic clouds and the possibility of a tsunami. More than 11,000 people were told to leave their homes that were located in the affected area. A joint team from the local authorities combed the villages surrounding the volcano and evacuated residents to safer areas by boat. However, Park Police spokesperson Sgt. David Schlosser told CBS News that officers gave preliminary reports of a stone falling off the exterior of the Washington Monument. There were people at the top of the structure, and they were immediately escorted out.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said the plant had both reactors shut down automatically after the quake. It also lost off-site power and was running its safety (cooling) systems on diesel generators. The Justice Department and FBI headquarters were also evacuated after the surprising event.

Amtrak said train service between Baltimore and Washington was operating at reduced speeds while crews inspected stations and railroad infrastructure, CBS News Producer Carter Yang reports. A private jet thought to be carrying another US congressional delegation has been denied permission to land at Kabul airport, a source familiar with the situation told CNN on Thursday. “[Macron] celebrated the ongoing dialogue between France and Tajikistan, and he expressed his desire to develop new collaborations, notably on the border front,” the Elysée Palace said in a statement Thursday. The Danish Ministry of Defense told CNN Thursday that the flight to Islamabad took off close to 6 p.m. “The window of opportunity to evacuate people is closing,” Heappey said, as the August 31 deadline to withdraw looms closer. An asylum seeker, on the other hand, is a refugee who has arrived in the country they wish to live and has formally applied for asylum via that country’s formal channels.

The source said the estimate is the number known to need assistance to reach the airport as of 8 a.m. A source told CNN there was another 36 hours until the end of the operation to evacuate. The Department of Defense, however, has since said evacuations will continue longer, if needed.

Given the rate of evacuation overnight, the 150 operational total may be a revised update on Blinken’s total of 500, and may even include some of the 1,000 uncertain cases. The statement suggests the operational total of Americans needing to be evacuated is smaller than the broader totals provided by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. There are an estimated 150 American citizens left in Afghanistan whom the United States need to get to the airport, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Kota Kinabalu is on the northern tip of Malaysian Borneo, just over 1,100 kilometres (688 miles) to the northwest of Ruang. After four more eruptions on Wednesday, Indonesia’s volcanology agency raised the alert level for the 725-metre (2,379-foot) high mountain to four, the highest on the scale. “We are still monitoring developments in the eruption of Mount Ruang and coordinating with relevant stakeholders … to anticipate the necessary actions to ensure flight safety, security and comfort,” said Ambar Suryoko, head of the regional airport authority. White House officials have renewed discussions about potentially declaring a national climate emergency, an unprecedented step that could unlock federal powers to stifle oil development. One or possibly two tornadoes then spent around an hour creeping toward Omaha, leaving behind damage consistent with an EF3 twister, with winds of 135 to 165 mph (217 to 265 kph), said Chris Franks, a meteorologist in the National Weather Service’s Omaha office. A tornado in suburban Omaha, Nebraska, demolished homes and businesses Saturday as it moved for miles through farmland and into subdivisions, then slammed an Iowa town.

Tajikistan, which shares a border with Afghanistan to the latter’s northeast, is approaching the 30-year anniversary of its independence on September 9. The two presidents also agreed to continue their exchanges moving forward in order to ensure regional “stability and security,” according to the Elysée. The problem many of these people are currently facing in Afghanistan is that the Taliban are preventing them from entering the airport; Afghan citizens leaving the country is bad PR for the militant group, who are claiming to have become more moderate. Finally, there are those who have special immigrant status, such as the SIV program in the United States. These people have applied for a special status which has been granted by the country they are seeking to enter. In the case of the US, many of these are people who worked with US and allied forces during the war, so therefore fear retribution from the Taliban.

The entire National Mall area around the monument was evacuated and will not open again until park service confirms the safety of the structure. The Secret Service said in a statement the White House was closed as a precaution as emergency crews investigated, and that the District of Columbia fire department was called in to evaluate and determine that the substance was not hazardous. Aviation authorities announced the closure of Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado until at least Thursday evening “due to the spread of volcanic ash which could endanger flight safety”. The airport has connections to countries including China, Singapore and South Korea. An industrial building in Lancaster County was hit, causing it to collapse with 70 people inside. Several were trapped, but everyone was evacuated, and the three injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said.

The leaders discussed Rafah and the President reiterated his clear position. The president was told that there are no initial reports of major infrastructure damage, including at airports and nuclear facilities and that there were currently no requests for assistance. Mr. Obama asked for regular updates on the situation and was also provided an update on preparations for Hurricane Irene. At the Pentagon, people immediately started running out of the building, CBS News Correspondent Chip Reid reports. The building was evacuated, though officials made an announcement that people could stay inside the heavily fortified building if they chose to, while it was inspected. Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesperson for the Secret Service, stated that the authorities are understanding how the white powder got into the White House.

Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency said residents would be relocated to Manado, a journey of 6 hours by boat. The President reaffirmed his ironclad commitment to Israel’s security following the successful defense against Iran’s unprecedented missile and drone attack earlier this month. They also reviewed ongoing talks to secure the release of hostages together with an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The President referred to his statement with 17 other world leaders demanding that Hamas release their citizens without delay to secure a ceasefire and relief for the people of Gaza. The President and the Prime Minister also discussed increases in the delivery of humanitarian assistance into Gaza including through preparations to open new northern crossings starting this week. The President stressed the need for this progress to be sustained and enhanced in full coordination with humanitarian organizations.

Concern is growing over reports that Afghans and American citizens are having trouble getting to the airport because of Taliban checkpoints. The U.S. is continuing to communicate with local Taliban commanders to move people through the checkpoints. Cocaine hydrochloride, which comes in the form of a white powder, is used as a local anaesthetic as well as being snorted by drug users.

See today's front and back pages, download the newspaper, order back issues and use the historic Daily Express newspaper archive. Secret Service units blocked off roads around the US President's official residence, while a DC Fire Department hazmat team was scrambled to the scene to investigate. The scare was sparked by what was described by the USSS as an "unknown item". On Friday, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby discussed the challenges of evacuating the embassy, saying it’s "not as simple as jumping in a taxicab" and that all U.S. government personnel had not yet been consolidated in a single location. Khartoum’s primary airport is closed and badly damaged, and airlines have suspended travel after a jet came under fire.

Further testing is also underway to determine what it exactly it is. Mr Guglielmi, quoting the fire department, added that the substance "did not present a threat". According to an official familiar with the investigation and the audio of a transmission from a D.C. Fire unit that responded to the incident, the drug, a white powder, tested positive for cocaine in a preliminary test.

The White House was evacuated after cocaine was found inside by the secret service. The White House was evacuated at about 8.45pm on Sunday as fire and emergency crews were brought in to do a rapid test. The White House was briefly evacuated on Sunday evening while President Joe Biden was at Camp David after Secret Service agents discovered the powder. Muhammad Wafid, the head of Indonesia’s geological agency, earlier said Ruang’s initial eruption sent an ash column two kilometres (1.2 miles) into the sky, with the second eruption pushing it to 2.5 kilometres (1.6 miles). Malaysia Airlines has suspended several flights to/from KL International Airport (KUL) to Sabah and Sarawak today, 18 April 2024 due to the volcanic eruption at Mount Ruang, Indonesia.

That brings the total to more than 95,700 people evacuated since Aug. 14 and over 101,300 since the end of July. However, the spokesperson refused to comment on where the item was discovered or how it was packed. He stated that it was uncovered by officers of the Secret Service's Uniformed Division while performing normal patrols through the complex.

Several factors converging at once have renewed the administration’s hopes that it can break through the stalemate in the next week or two. Mr. Biden’s team wants to capitalize on the successful defense of Israel from Iranian attack, rising public pressure in Israel to free the hostages and Saudi eagerness for a new diplomatic and security initiative. The Senate held a rare off-campus session in the nearby Postal Square building, CBS News Capitol Hill Producer John Nolen reports.

Guide to Comfortable and Eco-Friendly Off-Grid Living in an A-Frame Tiny House

teepee house

Prehistoric tipi ring sites in Colorado may have only a single-lodge foundation preserved, but sites with five to twenty rings are not uncommon. However, the original number of lodges present can be difficult to discern if stone slabs were collected and reused in a nearby location or redistributed on-site for other purposes. With your teepee construction concluded and your decorations in place, it's time to position it in its designated location. The intended location could be indoors, in your backyard, or as an attractive addition to your living room.

There they hunted bison and adapted a number of practices from their neighbors, including,  given their newfound access to abundant bison products, the larger hide-covered tipi. Theirs was a four-pole-framed tipi, a design similar to that of their northern cousins, the Eastern Shoshone. Up to eight prepared bison hides (or skins of other large game) were needed to cover a single tipi ten feet in diameter. Historical photographs and the occasional rock art panel show that exterior surfaces were often brightly painted with scenes featuring animals, people, spirit beings, or other symbols. In the nineteenth century, canvas covers quickly replaced hides as the bison herds dwindled from hunting pressure and, especially, wholesale slaughter by US government sanction.

In reality, these structures not only make very clever and responsible use of available resources, but also meet many of the physical and spiritual needs of their human inhabitants. A number of Native American tribes, largely known as the Plains Indians in North America, have a long history of constructing tipis for family dwellings, and sometimes for ceremonial purposes. The structures were especially important among individuals belonging to the Lakota, Pawnee, Arapahoe, Kiowah, and Cheyenne tribes. A typical family tipi is a conical, portable structure with two adjustable smoke flaps, multiple poles (historically from 12 to 25 ft or 3.7 to 7.6 m long) called lodge poles. So as we explore history, it is crucial not just to look but to see—to appreciate the wisdom, resilience, and creativity of those who came before us. Remember the path we traced, from the traditional architecture to the rich history of teepee houses.

The exterior hides could be adorned with tribal symbols and intricate patterns, seamlessly uniting aesthetics with functionality. As we look towards 2024, teepee house designs continue to evolve, embracing new trends and technologies that push the boundaries of what’s possible. Biophilic design principles, which seek to increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment through direct and indirect nature, are becoming increasingly integrated into teepee houses.

The Eco-Friendly Appeal

Additionally, it is important to only have fires when weather conditions and wind speeds allow for. It is important to clear any flammable materials, such as brush or dry leaves, away from the teepee while the fire is burning. It can also include applying waterproofing treatments and fire-retardant finishes, as well as setting up the internal structure within the teepee.

What did Indians wear on their feet in the winter?

The design of a tipi (also known as a tepee or a teepee – we use them interchangeably, because they’re all correct) is an ancient innovation that marries beautiful symmetry with your natural environment. By designing details that embrace the prevailing winds and the natural elements of the landscape, tipis possess the ability to self-ventilate, while also providing a warm and cozy shelter against the elements. Tipi design varied among the Plains peoples, a major difference being the number of primary poles used for the structural frame. The Siksikaitsitapi (Blackfoot Confederacy) and their allies favoured a four-pole system, while the Cree, Ojibwa and Siouan-speaking peoples (Dakota) typically used a three-pole method. The four-pole system resulted in a somewhat more circular form (as opposed to cone-shaped) and required fewer supplemental poles, but was less stable than the three-pole form.

With the right tools and materials, an experienced builder could build an 11-foot teepee in 4 to 5 hours. The lower level, located near the ground, was 12 to 15 feet in diameter and 4 to 5 feet in height, and the upper level was 11 to 14 feet in diameter and 2 to 3 feet in height. Teepee tents definitely have their benefits, and may be worth it depending on what you’re looking for and what you’re willing to invest. Teepees are typically large enough to comfortably sleep a family and their camping gear in their spacious cone shape, providing a great space to gather in and relax. All of these elements combined to create several layers of protection from the cold and wet winter weather.

Multi-functional furniture, built-in storage solutions, and flexible room layouts can help maximize the available space, making it suitable for a variety of activities and living arrangements. Natural light plays a significant role in these designs, with strategic placement of windows and skylights creating bright, inviting interiors that reduce the need for artificial lighting. The distinctive structure of a teepee house, rooted in ancient nomadic lifestyles, has the transformative power to turn conventional living spaces into captivating and minimalist house designs. At its core, teepee house design is about simplicity, sustainability, and connection to nature. The basic principles involve creating a sturdy, conical structure that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

Ensure the tanks are appropriately sized to meet your water needs and strategically positioned for easy access. Opt for a propane or wood-burning stove for cooking, as these methods are efficient and provide an authentic off-grid living experience. Solar ovens, which use the sun's energy for cooking, are also worth considering to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Teepees typically do not feature conventional plumbing, necessitating alternative solutions such as composting toilets and outdoor kitchens. The spacious layout enables inhabitants to fully engage with their natural surroundings. This can result in an increased affinity for the natural world, lower stress levels, and an overall enhancement of mental health. It's an ideal option for individuals seeking a balanced connection with the outdoor environment.

These iconic tiny house conical structures, known for their simple yet efficient design, continue to intrigue us and stand as symbols of Indigenous cultures' deep connection to the land and nature. Whether among the nomadic tribes of North America or in cultures globally, teepees embody human resourcefulness and the timeless charm of a design that transcends both time and borders. By delving into the history and cultural significance of teepees, we gain a profound appreciation for the invaluable contributions of Indigenous societies and the lasting appeal of these iconic structures.

The History Behind Teepee Dwellings- Teepee Joy Blog

teepee house

Teepee designs range from luxurious retreats to compact urban homes, showcasing versatility. They challenge conventional ideas of home and adapt traditional forms for modern needs. Once at the campsite, Plains people built tipis that were about 4–6 m in diameter at the base, and tapered upward to form a smoke hole at the top. Smoke holes were essential to the tipi; without them, the fires built in the middle of the tipi would cause the structure to burn. Flaps supported by external poles sometimes regulated the draft of the smoke hole to improve ventilation and carry off smoke. The frame of the tipi was draped with a sewn cover of bison skins arranged over as many as 20 poles.

Innovative Solutions for Compact Living

During the winter months, this heat source became very important for survival, as did the ability to have a fire that is sheltered from wind and weather. During the hotter months, the opening at the top also vented away hot air, allowing for a cooler indoor environment. If you’re looking at living in a tipi in a cold climate, choose the smallest tipi that fits your needs as it will be easier to keep warm. One option for full time living would be to have a smaller winter tipi pitched next to a larger summer tipi that you don’t heat in the colder months. Snow is also a great insulator — the higher it builds up around the tipi, the better the heat retention. Yurt doors can approach the weather sealing of conventional doors while tipi entrances come equipped with roll up canvas doors.

Table: Space-Saving Features in Teepee House Design

The marriage of rustic and indigenous-inspired designs not only enhances the visual appeal of a TeePee house but also fosters a commitment to sustainability. It goes beyond mere aesthetics because it's a conscious choice to create living spaces that are not only charming but also environmentally responsible. The result is a harmonious blend of nature-inspired elements and a timeless aesthetic that turns a TeePee house into a haven where style and environmental consciousness coexist. Indigenous-inspired elements become not just decorative accents but meaningful contributors to a lifestyle that values both style and functionality. It’s a narrative we've embraced, weaving a tapestry of inspiration from nomadic cultures into the fabric of our own living spaces, creating homes that echo the ingenious spirit of resourcefulness and elegance. If you want to build a teepee for recreation, novelty, or because you want to live in an alternative structure, read on to find out where to start.

Moreover, tipis are mobile, lightweight dwellings and can be taken down with ease, similar to the Blackfoot nomadic way of life. In this way, tipis are physical references to a people whose relationship with the land is both constant and ever changing. In addition, Teepees historically have religious, cultural, and social importance among tribes utilizing them, and may feature decorative artworks or symbols.

Changing Perceptions with Innovative Interior Design

In other cases, a seemingly random scatter of lodges may have obscured a subtler pattern of slight clustering among a subset of lodges housing members of an individual clan or other social or kinship grouping. Regardless of the lodge pattern, individual families and bands within a tribe would recognize where they belonged within the village layout. The use of horses as beasts of burden made it possible to build larger tipis and to move them more easily.

Tipis are more commonly used as dwellings, and are often simple structures without artworks or decorations. The smoke flaps at the top of the tent are typically adjustable, allowing for greater or lesser amounts of ventilation. Teepees, on the other hand, are made from canvas stretched over 15 or more poles and are typically not fitted with smoke flaps. The designs found in traditional teepees have a symbolic meaning that reaches back to the time of the creation myth. The four wind directions are traditionally represented by an eagle and represent the four sacred colors- red, yellow, black, and white- that represents the four powers of the Great Spirit.

Alternatively, you may choose to coat a portion of the interior with chalkboard paint for creative play and drawing. Regular cleaning is vital, particularly if the teepee is exposed to the elements. Timely repair of any tears or damage is crucial to prevent further deterioration. Consider storing the teepee during adverse weather conditions or when not in use, especially if it's outdoors, to prolong its lifespan. Whether you’re aiming for a serene and soothing nursery or a vibrant and playful kids’ room, the right combination of a teepee and wallpaper can achieve that perfect balance. It’s about creating a space where your child feels comfortable, inspired, and free to explore their imagination.

These conical structures were designed for portability, durability, and harmony with the natural environment. Modern teepee house designs transform these principles into permanent dwellings that reflect a deep respect for sustainability and a desire to connect with nature. By integrating traditional design elements with contemporary technologies, architects and designers have created homes that are both innovative and deeply rooted in cultural heritage.

The Keota Stone Circles Archaeological District in Weld County is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Scores of roughly circular “tipi rings” such as this one have been documented there. To make sure the fabric fits tightly around the frame, fasten it in place by either using pins or marking the sections that require sewing. Commence wrapping the fabric around the frame, leaving an opening at the front to serve as the entrance. Employ a level to confirm that the frame stands upright and make any necessary adjustments to the poles.

Canvas has the added benefit of being more lightweight and thus easier to transport. To be sure, some Colorado groups maintained their traditional nomadic lifestyle throughout the Prehistoric era into documented history, with the tipi as a favored choice of shelter. By the gold rush of the mid-nineteenth century, historical accounts in newspapers, photographs, and other records document the use of the tipi by virtually every indigenous group that inhabited Colorado.

's Last Christmas, a full-band version of their previously unreleased song, Christmas by the Phone, and an alternate version of Let the World Be Still, originally by their side project, The Madden Brothers. Since 2005, the band's lineup has consisted of Joel Madden (lead vocals), Benji Madden (guitar, vocals), Paul Thomas (bass), Billy Martin (guitar, keyboards), and Dean Butterworth (drums, percussion). For example, on the surface the album’s first single, “Predictable,” seems like a standard relationship song, but it’s really about the Maddens’ father, who abandoned the family on Christmas Eve, when the twins were just 16. Both songs have merit, but buy the disc with “Falling Away” – it’s just a better song. “The energy that the people listening give back, it fills you with something that nothing else can.

To write a song and have it embraced by someone, even one person, I don’t think that’s something that everyone gets to experience,” says Madden. “When Joel did the spoken-word bridge, I had to record that with him alone, because it was really personal. We’ve done it [live] acoustically and Joel won’t do it, he’s too embarrassed,” says Madden. While Madden prefers death in his music, he and the band have come out strongly on the other side of the eternal “to be or not to be” question. The pop-punk quintet open the clip with a young man gazing at old Polaroids and flashing back to memories from his childhood. As a boy, the protagonist reads comic books and plays in the backyard, but the plot turns dark when his mother lashes out in anger.

Farmhouse Floor Plans Small, Classic, Modern Farmhouse Plans

farm house floor plans

From the first "folk" houses built of mud, grass, stone, or logs in the 1700s to today's version, the American farmhouse remains one of the most picturesque and charming home styles. Today's farmhouse house plans have the same elegant beauty but with design elements that are practical to modern needs, including open floor plans, green living amenities, and bonus rooms. Whether you’re in the market for modern farmhouse 1-story house plans, one-and-a-half story, or two-story plans, we offer a wide range of floor plans conducive to your lifestyle, budget, and preference.

Bedroom Features

Modern farmhouse house plans combine the traditional appeal of farmhouses with architectural aspects of contemporary design. Expect to see gables and porches with clean, simple lines outside and open-concept spaces inside. Large modern windows are typical—they define exterior style, flood the interior with natural light, and bring in great views. Modern farmhouse designs fall under the transitional house plan category and are perfect for those looking for a unique yet balanced home. The farmhouse style is diverse and based on homes built in farming communities across North America. Farmhouse plans come in one- and two-story layouts and typically include front and back porches, or a wraparound porch that hugs multiple corners.

We offer many modern farmhouse house plans with basement options, and if the plan you like doesn’t already have a basement, it can be modified to add one. The average size of a farmhouse can vary greatly depending on several factors, such as location, budget, and personal preferences. While still inspired by the original farmhouse design, a modern farmhouse incorporates more modern elements such as clean lines, neutral colors, and industrial touches. This style often features metal light fixtures, concrete floors, and open floor plans that create a sense of spaciousness and flow.

One of the injured CMPD officers "fought for his life for several hours before succumbing to his injuries," CMPD confirmed late Tuesday night. Video released by the department shows flames and smoke billowing from a structure in the 7700 block of Liberty Row Drive. Fifteen construction workers were rescued by firefighters. Fire officials say two maydays were called during the rescue missions and firefighters had to go in to assist their colleagues who called the maydays.

How often do shootings like this happen?

One was 17 years old, according to Chief Johnny Jennings of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, who said Tuesday that they were cooperating and had not been charged. The shootout on Monday was one of the deadliest for American law enforcement in recent years. The internal document also contradicts claims by Charlotte Fire officials that the department had no records related to the Liberty Row Drive construction project and had not been contacted by the contractor. The five-alarm fire, one of the largest in Charlotte history, took two workers’ lives, Demonte Sherrill and Reuben Holmes. Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles said the city is grieving the fallen officers.

Large clouds of smoke and flames shot hundreds of feet in the air from the area of Barclay Downs Drive and Fairview Road, near SouthPark Mall. Officials said firefighters were tasked with extinguishing the "very fast-moving" fire, which was over 2,000 degrees. A friend of one of the men who was killed in the fire, 30-year-old Demonte Sherrill, told WCNC Charlotte they fear he died when the building collapsed on top of him.

"There's indication that the suspect saw them coming to the house prior to them getting to the front door." The task force was made up of officers from multiple agencies, who often team up to find and arrest suspects. Those killed included two veteran officers of the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott. Eight officers were wounded during the shootout and taken to hospitals. Three were pronounced dead on arrival, and another died from his injuries on Monday night.

A crane operator spotted two people working on windows and tried to swing a basket over to them to help, but the smoke and fire made the rescue too difficult. Channel 9 has not confirmed that Demonte Sherrill and the other construction worker were those two people. The crane operator, among the 15 people rescued by firefighters, was treated by local EMS for non life-threatening injuries and taken to a hospital, fire officials reported. Firefighters in North Carolina rescued at least 15 people including a crane operator Thursday after a five-alarm fire involving injuries broke out at a construction site near downtown Charlotte. Firefighters were trying to reach the two trapped construction workers, but firefighters had to declare their own "mayday" during the rescue attempt.

Drivers are being asked by CMPD to avoid Liberty Drive, Assembly Street, Barclay Downs Drive and Park South Drive until all flames are contained. By 6 p.m., Fairview Road was reopened during the congested evening commute. "As a construction site is open a lot of wood is exposed, the fire moved very rapidly," a Charlotte Fire Department said during a news conference. — A five-alarm fire near the SouthPark Mall in south Charlotte broke out Thursday, causing a massive first responder presence to fight it. Workers told Channel 9′s Hunter Sáenz many people started yelling “fire” to do what they could to tell everyone to evacuate. But the flames just got too bad and they had to make a run for it themselves. CHARLOTTE — A massive fire broke out Thursday morning at an apartment complex under construction in the SouthPark area of Charlotte, killing at least one person. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Chief Johnny Jennings had praise Friday for firefighters who helped bring the 15 workers to safety.

On Tuesday, the US Marshals Service identified the fourth officer killed as one of its deputies, 48-year-old Thomas Weeks. He had a wife and four children, US Marshals Service Director Ron Davis said. "They knew what they were going into and still held their own in an attempt to apprehend this suspect," he said. Jennings said the fallen officers were "heroes that were just simply trying to keep our community safe."

(WBTV) - The Charlotte Fire Department has identified the two men killed in the massive construction fire in south Charlotte’s SouthPark neighborhood last week. When conditions changed, the rescuers transmitted their own distress call and another company of firefighters was dispatched to rescue the first group. Unfortunately, neither set of firefighters was able to locate the two trapped workers. More than 90 firefighters were called to battle a massive fire at an apartment complex that was under construction near SouthPark Mall Thursday. The fire started shortly after 9am on Liberty Row Drive. Their fire alarm started to go off in their building, so the office workers evacuated.

The site of the fire had two twin buildings that were under construction. Firefighters did successfully extinguish small fires that had spread to the second building. That second building was largely undamaged during the five-alarm fire across the street.
